Fat Washed Bourbon:
1 750 ml. bottle bourbon of choice
3 T. The Tasteful Olive Blood Orange infused olive oil (or other flavored oil of choice)
Fat washing is a cocktail technique that infuses spirits with the flavor and texture of fats or oils. In this recipe, blood orange olive oil adds subtle citrus notes and a silky richness to the bourbon. After the bourbon and oil rest together, the mixture is frozen so the oil solidifies and can be removed, leaving behind a smooth, flavorful spirit perfect for cocktails like an Old Fashioned or Manhattan.
Pour the bourbon into a clean glass container with a lid (such as a mason jar) and add the olive oil. Shake for 30 seconds to combine. Allow the bourbon mixture to sit on the counter for 4-6 hours then place the jar in the freezer overnight. The next day, remove the fat that has floated to the top and solidified. Strain the bourbon through cheesecloth (you may have to do this more than once) to remove the remaining oil bits. Use the bourbon in your favorite Old Fashioned or Manhattan cocktail! Here's a recipe we like:
Old Fashioned:
3 dashes angostura bitters
1 t. sugar
1 t. water
2 oz. fat washed bourbon
Ice
Candied orange peel or Amarena cherries for garnish, if desired
In a cocktail shaker, add the sugar and the angostura bitters, then add the water and muddle to combine until the sugar is dissolved. Add the bourbon and ice and shake for 30 seconds to combine. Serve over ice garnished with candied orange peel or Amarena cherries, if desired.
